These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level domains remained functional.
